how to draw a fence

This project was funded by the DCLA Premier Grant from Staten Island Arts, with public funding from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.

The wetlands have always been at the periphery of my summer memories, and today, the once blurry edge between the swamp, and my childhood memories, has developed a literal fence. This set of drawings captures the intersections of a local wetland in my neighborhood—a bucolic 107 acre “park.” The first set is a section cutting through the park length and width-wise, demonstrating the intersections at the adjacencies of the park, residential neighborhoods on one side, industrial sites on the other.

The project looks at these types of boundaries—not necessarily always physical—affect our conception and understanding of what is on either side leading to an exploration of our relationship with the land and local, frequently overlooked yet rich ecology. The fieldwork, collected archival and site data, alongside the drawings and studies culminate in a field guide meant to be distributed to the immediate neighborhood and beyond.
